The People’s Kitchen – August 2018

Project of the Month

The Hall Design Group’s project of the month can be referred to as “the people’s choice” kitchen. Given the chance to present what is desired within the kitchen today, this project would be my choice. Clean lines and “eloquence thru simplicity”. The main objective was to remove the wall from the kitchen to the family room. The clients enjoy entertaining and wanted both areas to act as one. Leicht cabinetry supplied by the Hall Design Group serves as the cornerstone for the project. Mixing warm wood grain laminates with the dark anthracite accents truly work off one another. Notice how we also introduced industrial textures to accent the clean lines. This kitchen isn’t all about aesthetics, however. Function was the first consideration when designing the space. The “Galley sink” was used to create an aquatic workstation that serves many purposes. Notice the large one level island, which doubles up as both a workspace and a gathering area for guests. My favorite area is the entertainment area. I brought the same materials into the family room and kept the simplistic theme. As you enter the room your eye follows a light and airy horizontal flow. Don’t be deceived though, The Hall Design Group was able to have the area serve many functions such as the TV, storage for components, and a niche for art and general storage. I also wanted to save some brick from the original space which creates an extra texture in the space.

SOUS VIDE – COOKINGS BIG TREND OF THE YEAR:

Once the choice of top chefs, Sous Vide is increasingly becoming popular for today’s passionate, home cook. With this method of cooking you can produce restaurant quality cooking in your home with the guidance of this French food preservation method. Sous Vide cooking is a method of cooking using precise temperature control to create consistent results. Sous Vide is defined as “cooking with the food vacuum sealed in a water bath or now with the aid of air and steam”. It is a very slow and precise method of cooking used to gain maximum results. In the past, sous vide could only be prepared at some of the finest restaurants in the world, but we are now seeing many appliance manufacturers that have their ovens with a setting to allow for this method of cooking to be done at home. You can check out steam ovens by Bosch, Miele and Wolf and refer to the single wall oven by Electrolux which has an “Air Sous Vide” method to gain best results.

A Fresh Take on the Galley Kitchen – May 2018

Featured Kitchen of the Month

When working with a client who has a galley kitchen I often get asked “what can I do with my kitchen?, it seems like I am stuck with the same design”. This kitchen is a perfect example of how a simple galley kitchen can be transformed into one that is not only functional, but pleasing to the eye. When I started working with this couple, I found a galley kitchen with a table at the end. The house sits on the edge of the metro-parks with a beautiful view from the back. The first item discussed was to bring the outdoors in. This was accomplished by creating an opening in the dividing wall between the kitchen and the family area. The next step was to increase both counter space and storage. This was accomplished by integrating a fixed eating area against the wall. This area  looks built-in but is able to be pulled away from the wall when needed to seat an extra person. I ran a wall panel down to give the appearance of the table growing out of the wall. By going the route of the fixed table I was able to extend the counter and storage all the way to the end of the kitchen. Another feature to break up the galley was to visually create a different space with the cooking area. Notice how I pulled the cooking area forward to give the space dimension and I also changed the color to create visual excitement. One obstacle that we needed to overcome was the window being lower than the counter. We did not want to alter the architectural integrity of the home by raising the window so we put an herb box in instead. This is one of the favorite features of the kitchen. One word that has gotten a bad wrap in the past is the word “vinyl”. Notice how interesting this vinyl tile floor is. It does an amazing job tying everything together. With the selection available today for vinyl flooring, one can have many opportunities available to create a functional and yet eloquent look to the space.

Knock Knock – Who’s There?

Believe me this isn’t a joke! Introducing Miele’s newest in the line of award winning dishwashers, the G6885 SCVi k20 am. Keeping in character with the European minimalistic philosophy, this dishwasher requires only 2 knocks from you to automatically open. This dishwasher also includes features that make Miele the world’s leader in dishwashers. Automatic half load sensor, original flatware tray on top, superior washing results, ever so quiet, and clean air-drying technology by the intake of room air from a side intake system within the unit. This unit makes a fantastic addition to any kitchen.

The Beauty of Basements – March 2018

The Beauty of Basements

One area within my business that does not get the attention it deserves is basements.  Over the years I have had the opportunity to remodel many basements.  The end result was an area in which the whole family was involved in the decision-making process.  A newly remodeled basement adds so much valuable space to the home for the entire family to enjoy for many years to come.  It also adds significant value to the home.  For many families it seems that the starting point to think about remodeling is when the family’s children reach the teenage years and are looking for a “place to escape”.  Many parents choose to create a welcoming space that their children will want to stay home with friends instead of being somewhere else.  Some of the popular area’s requested include an entertainment area, work out area, game area, storage area, laundry area, workbench area, craft area and either a bar or a combination kitchen/bar.  With most, if not all of these areas included in the space, one can see that all of the family’s needs can be met within one space allowing for them to spend quality time as a family.

Project of the Month:

Over the past year I was approached by clients that were looking to have their bathroom remodeled. The minute I pulled into their driveway I knew that that this was going to be a project to be excited about. The clients live in the eastern suburbs and have a contemporary style home that blends in and becomes one with nature. Bringing the outdoors in was a major priority to them. Also on the top of the list was to have a “spa” like feel to the space. I was excited when they instructed me to use my creativity to obtain the goals organically. In knowing all of this I wanted to make a statement the minute one enters the room. Please notice how I used a floating piece of wood to act as counter space and then the horizontal lines draw your eye to the center in which you will find a lit niche for display purposes. With the room limited in size I wanted to visually enlarge it. I started once again by bringing the outdoors in by having a feature wall with river stone. I then ran a horizontal piece of mirroring from wall to wall. This wall sets the tone for the entire space. When the mirror was applied I floated it out and installed LED lighting behind. There is a type of mental therapy called “Chroma therapy”. This term means therapy thru light. It has such a soothing effect on us when in its presence. Once in this room you will never want to leave.

Kitchen Trends – December 2017

Kitchen Trends 2018

This past month I had the opportunity to present 2 seminars at the Ohio Design Centre’s Market Day. One of the seminars was “Kitchen Trends 2018”. I have been in the Kitchen & Bath industry for over 33 years and have never seen a more exciting time than right now, and this topic fits into that perfectly. There seems to be a “perfect storm” coming together in that there are so many new and industry changing things happening on all ends of the spectrum. Over the years I have hesitated giving a “trends” seminar because I simply felt these trends would be short lived and not be a factor for long.

Today I do not feel that this is the case and the “trends” I discussed should not be called “trends” but rather part of a “revolution” within the industry. One of the topics I discussed at market day is “Mise en Place”, which is a French term meaning “everything has a place”. I have taught in the past about the “triangle” method, which is where there are 3 work zones in the kitchen and together they create a triangle. “Mise en Place” has now joined the family. We are now seeing multiple cooks in the kitchen and to accommodate them we are creating “work zones”. An example of this would be the sink area. There are now sinks within the industry that will accommodate multiple people (refer to the galley sink). The cooking area also offers similar options for today’s cooking family and encourages the kitchen to be a communal cooking area.

Mise en Place

Open layouts are also commonplace when designing the new home or remodel. It is a priority with today’s kitchen to have a space that acts not only as the kitchen but also the dining, entertaining, and work stations. Some other trends worth mentioning are “smart appliances”. These get the title smart due to the fact that you can now have “Alexa” brew your coffee for you, or you can have the oven start from outside the home. One day soon you will be able to have a camera inside the refrigerator to get an inventory of the food, and perhaps someday we will be able to have the unit do an inventory of our food and create a shopping list.

There are so many more exciting trends to hear about and the public will now have the opportunity to hear “Kitchen Trends 2018” at the upcoming NARI Home Remodeling Show next month at the IX Center along with the Great Big Home & Garden Show in February. Open Layout Design

And the Winner Is…

It is truly an honor to announce that I was recently awarded first place in the coveted NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association) competition that was held this fall. The winning kitchen is located in Medina, Ohio, and was a project I truly enjoyed being a part of. It makes a difference to be part of a project in which the client holds such a passion for cooking but also faith in the designer to create this special kitchen space in their home. The client allowed me to be creative all while maintaining the integrity of the architecture. The project turned out great and I am proud to have been a part of it. To see more photos of this kitchen along with many other kitchens and baths, please visit the gallery.

Leicht Innovations 2018

I am proud to represent Leicht, the leader in fine European kitchen furniture for many reasons.

When it comes to fulfilling the kitchen desires of the client Leicht always takes the lead. The design world is quickly evolving into one of “modern style”. Over the past year I have been approached by clients who are looking to achieve an “industrial” looking kitchen. Leicht listened to the clients’ requests and introduced the new Minera series.

With German technology, Leicht was able to achieve a metallic looking effect on a series of their cabinetry. These doors are a matte lacquer and are anti-fingerprint. The different finishes include tarnished brass, charred black steel, and also a rusty steel effect. This series will greatly aid me in creating a unique kitchen space at an affordable price, as Minera is at a lower price series. We are on the cusp of a design revolution in which with technology we can create spaces never seen before due to extreme cost and Leicht is on the forefront of that.

A Tile That Redefines the Vision of Space

Located in the heart of the South Chagrin Reservation I recently completed a beautiful “modern” kitchen. In order to complete this project we needed to locate a tile that would be minimalistic in nature yet have some interesting and crisp architectural lines to enhance the finished product. We ended up going with a tile company named “WOW”. Wow is a tile line used in all areas of the home that can be described as “elegant yet contemporary” and allows the freedom of creativity. I have fallen in love with this line due to the fact that it will give me another tool to express my creativity and vision for the space.

Fall is the Time for Learning

Remodeling Resources Available this Fall

I have been in this business for over 30 years and my philosophy has always remained the same. I firmly believe that the best thing you can do at the start of a remodel is to know and take advantage of educational resources available to you. This fall is a great time for that as there are many opportunities to learn about the new and exciting things emerging into the marketplace. Throughout the month of September I will be a featured speaker at Homearama in Aurora, Ohio. I will be discussing “Kitchen Trends 2017” and encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to learn about what’s hot in the design world this year. The talks will be at 1:00pm on September 9th, 16th, and 23rd.

In October I will be offering my first Kitchen Design Course of the season. On October 7th from 9-3 I will be discussing everything you need to understand as you prepare to invest in a kitchen remodel. Come join me at the Ohio Design center for this fan favorite class, where we discuss everything from cabinets, appliances, tops, and so much more. Should a bath remodel be in your future I will be hosting a class at the Orange Community Center on October 21st from 9:30-11:30. To sign up for the kitchen class visit my website (thehalldesigngroup.com) or call 216-870-2644. For inquiries or to sign up for the bath class please contact 216-831-8601.

During the first week of November the Ohio Design Center will be hosting Fall Market Day. On November 2nd designers are invited to visit the Design Center, walk around the showrooms, and see all the exciting design ideas they have to offer. Market Day will be a great opportunity to educate yourself on the latest trends in the design world. Throughout the day I will be giving several talks that will apply to your kitchen design needs. At 11am I will be presenting “European Influence in today’s kitchen” and at 1pm I will be discussing “Kitchen trends 2017”.

I encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities to gain knowledge that will aid in your remodel now or in the future. I hope to see you soon.

– John

September’s Space of the Month:

Nestled in horse country lies a beautiful home, and the kitchen gracefully compliments the architecture of the space beautifully. The cabinetry is just one of the many features that makes this kitchen so unique. We blended whites and grays creating a warm and inviting feel. The cabinets are frameless but if you notice we emphasized a furniture feel in certain areas. I elected to use the same door, but with inset construction in these areas, allowing them so stand out. The wood hood is the jewel of the kitchen and sets the tone for the rest of the space. The owner’s are so excited by the outcome and have already had the opportunity to be the “chefs” that this space allows them to be.

Why Online Shopping and Remodeling Don’t Mix

Online Shopping vs The Design Firm:

Over the past year I have had more and more clients ask me about the pros and cons of online shopping. I have also had projects where the client has purchased their own appliances and plumbing online. These situations have caused the projects to not run as smoothly as I would have liked, and then my hands have been tied in trying to remedy the situation(s) for them. A prime example of this exact situation is a kitchen remodel project this past year. The Hall Design Group was responsible for the majority of the project besides the appliances (which the owner purchased online). The owner’s one request for me was to complete the project by the beginning of November so they could enjoy Thanksgiving  in their new kitchen. I assured them it would not be an issue from my end. To make a long story short, the wall oven was installed and did not work. As a result, the owner was not able to cook their turkey in the oven because it was a real problem trying to get the right part shipped out in time. When the part did come, it was the wrong one.

Online shopping can be helpful in in educating the consumer, but the process only goes so far in preparing the clients in making the “big decisions.” It is beneficial for people to discuss products and design ideas with a professional–creating a direct, personal connection. I always have clients come to me at the end of the process and thank me by saying “John, I didn’t know how involved the remodel process is and I am so grateful you have been there guiding us throughout our remodel.”

On the flip side, as professionals we owe it to our clients to be experienced, knowledgeable and passionate partners. We are supposed to guide our clients through the design process and apply excellent company values that the client can trust during their work with you over the next several months. We are also ambassadors that will make sure things run as smoothly as possible.

At the end of the day it is all about relationship building, trust and overall design experience. These ever so important details cannot be found online and never will.

This month’s featured product:
Wolf’s new Contemporary gas cooktop

Please allow me to introduce to you the hottest (no pun intended) appliance that are a must-have item for many of my clients’ kitchens. The initial draw to the new Wolf CG365C/S contemporary gas cooktop is the sleek European design. The illuminated controls are separate from the unit (which allows for more available top cooking service) and installed on the face of the cabinet. The knob illumination allows for one to see if a burner is on. The knobs are also available in red– should that be your preference. However, the sleekest part of this cooktop is not the knob location but how we can take a cooktop and make it flush with the counter. This application only enhances a true minimalistic design.

Once we get past the design and look at the performance, we see why this cooktop is truly a cook’s dream. There are 5 burners with the middle burner being Wolf’s most powerful burner yet on a gas cooktop. The middle burner is 20,000 BTU’S and delivers faster boils and restaurant-quality sears. The lower tier of the of the Wolf dual-stack burner also goes to the opposite extreme and can offer only a breadth of a flame, which is ideal for gentle simmering and melting of fine chocolates etc.

From a designer’s perspective, the only drawback to this unit is that it cannot be down drafted, and must have a hood above.
